Minister for Petroleum Ali Pervaiz Malik has indicated that the petrol subsidy scheme for motorcyclists could be discontinued within the coming days.
According to the minister, the final decision regarding the future of the subsidy programme will be made by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif after consultations with provincial governments.
Ali Pervaiz Malik said the relief scheme was launched through cooperation between the federal and provincial governments to shield ordinary citizens from the impact of rising fuel prices.
He added that the government had provided a total of Rs130 billion in relief under the scheme. Financial assistance was transferred directly to registered motorcycle owners who had submitted their details through the Excise Department’s database.
The subsidy programme was introduced after a sharp increase in petrol prices, with eligible motorcyclists receiving Rs2,000 per month. A dedicated mobile application was also launched to facilitate registration and the distribution of financial support.
Meanwhile, the government has recently announced significant reductions in fuel prices. Under the revised rates, petrol has been reduced by Rs74.28 per litre to Rs299.50 per litre, while diesel has fallen by Rs67.31 per litre to Rs311.47 per litre.
The possible withdrawal of the subsidy scheme is expected to be considered in light of the recent decline in fuel prices and ongoing consultations between federal and provincial authorities.
