KARACHI: The Meteorological Department has issued an emergency heatwave alert for Sindh, warning that intense and potentially life-threatening heat conditions are expected to persist across the province until tomorrow. However, relief in the form of rain is also forecast from June 1, which is expected to reduce the severity of the heat.
According to the Met Office, temperatures in most districts of Sindh are likely to remain 4 to 6 degrees Celsius above normal. In areas including Sukkur, Shikarpur, Jacobabad, Larkana, and Dadu, the mercury may reach a scorching 50°C.
Similarly, severe heat conditions are expected in Qambar Shahdadkot, Moenjo Daro, Ghotki, and Khairpur. In Tharparkar, Badin, Hyderabad, and Mirpurkhas, temperatures may rise up to 47°C.
Despite the ongoing heatwave, weather officials have predicted light to moderate rainfall with dust storms and thunderstorms in parts of the province from June 1. Rain is expected in Qambar Shahdadkot, Dadu, Mirpurkhas, and Tharparkar, which is likely to bring much-needed relief from the extreme heat.
The department also warned that electricity demand and consumption may increase significantly due to the severe weather conditions, potentially putting pressure on the power supply system, including in Karachi.
Health experts and the Meteorological Department have advised citizens, especially children, women, and the elderly, to take strict precautionary measures. They have urged people to avoid unnecessary travel and maintain adequate hydration during the heatwave.
Farmers have also been advised to take special care of crops and livestock in view of the extreme weather conditions.
Authorities have instructed the Sindh government, district administrations, and relevant institutions to remain on high alert to deal with any possible emergency situations, including heatstroke cases.
