Over 10,000 animals at Awam Dost Mandi as 48 trucks arrive every 4 hours

KARACHI: The arrival of sacrificial animals at the Awam Dost Mandi on the city’s Northern Bypass accelerated on Wednesday, marking the 18th day since consignments began arriving for Eidul-Azha, with traders and visitors filling the sprawling market well into the night.

Officials at the marshalling area said heavy truck movement had intensified, with 48 loaded vehicles dispatched from the holding yards every four hours. Long queues of vehicles were reported at the marshalling points as consignments from across the country continued to pour in.

Market authorities estimated that more than 10,000 animals have reached the cattle market so far. New consignments from Sheikhupura, Rahim Yar Khan, Kashmore and several Karachi farmhouses have added to the variety and numbers, officials said, giving the market a bustling and colourful appearance.

Cattle-market administrator Tariq Tanoli told MM News that merchants were working around the clock to attend to the animals and serve increasing numbers of buyers. “Traders and workers are busy day and night to ensure animals are fed and cared for; families have made the market their temporary home,” he said, noting a steady influx of visitors that included women and children taking photographs alongside prized animals.

Meanwhile, citizens were observed camping in and around the market until late hours, while a food-street in front of the administration block had come alive to serve visitors. Market management said vendors have access to 24-hour water, electricity and fodder supplies to maintain continuous operations during the peak period.

Despite the heavy traffic and extended hours, administration officials said the atmosphere at the Northern Bypass cattle market remained peaceful, with Karachi residents visiting in large numbers to inspect animals and complete purchases ahead of the festival.
