Renowned Bollywood actor Rajpal Yadav, celebrated for his iconic comedic roles, has surrendered to authorities at Tihar Jail after the Delhi High Court refused to grant him any further extension in his legal battle.

The 54-year-old actor turned himself in on Thursday at 4:00 PM. Prison authorities confirmed the surrender, stating that standard operating procedures are now being followed for his incarceration.

Rajpal Yadav had requested a one-week extension from the court, claiming he had arranged 5 million Indian Rupees ($5,000,000 INR) and needed more time to facilitate the payment.

However, the court remained unconvinced. The Delhi High Court remarked that it does not grant special concessions or create unique circumstances for individuals simply based on their background or industry status.

The court noted that while leniency can be necessary, it cannot be extended indefinitely in the face of continuous non-compliance.

Why is Rajpal Yadav in jail?
The roots of the actor’s legal crisis trace back to a financial dispute involving M.G. Murali Projects Pvt Ltd.

The company filed a lawsuit against Rajpal Yadav and his wife, alleging they issued several checks that subsequently bounced, leaving substantial dues unpaid.

In 2018, a Delhi court found the couple guilty and sentenced the actor to six months in prison, a verdict that was upheld the following year.

In June 2024, the Delhi High Court had temporarily suspended his sentence, directing him to take “serious and sincere” steps to resolve the debt. However, in its latest ruling this month, the court concluded that the actor had repeatedly failed to honor his promises regarding the repayment of the money.
