Mayor Karachi Murtaza Wahab has confirmed that the newly constructed Hub Canal will become operational on August 14, delivering a crucial boost to the water supply in Keamari and West districts of the city.
Announcing the development on social media platform X, Wahab stated that the Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation (KWSC) is prepared to activate the new 100 million gallons per day (MGD) Hub Canal. The initiative is part of the Sindh government’s broader effort to expand and stabilize water distribution across the city.

Constructed at a cost of Rs12.8 billion, the project is scheduled for completion within a record period of nine months. In addition to the new canal, the rehabilitation of the existing Hub Canal is also underway, which is expected to contribute a further 50 MGD to the supply system.
The project, approved in 2022, includes not only the construction of a new canal but also major upgrades to critical infrastructure such as the Hub Pumping Station, the Rising Main, and the Hub Filter Plant. These components are being enhanced to increase capacity from 80 MGD to 100 MGD.
A spokesperson for the KWSC expressed confidence that the project would substantially alleviate Karachi’s chronic water shortages, particularly benefiting residents in the Keamari and West districts.
