Lawyers blocked traffic at Wadhwa Bypass on Thursday as tensions between the legal fraternity and police in Hyderabad, sparked by the arrest of a lawyer, remained unresolved even after five days. The protesting lawyers have demanded the suspension of the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP).
Earlier, on Tuesday, a group of agitated lawyers managed to break into the office of Hyderabad SSP Dr. Farrukh Ali during a prolonged demonstration. The protest, led by members of the legal community, was aimed at demanding the removal of Bhitai Nagar Station House Officer (SHO).
The dispute began on Monday when the SHO registered a case against Advocate Ali Raza Bozdar, a lawyer from Tando Allahyar, for using a vehicle with tinted windows and a fancy number plate. When the SHO refused to withdraw the FIR, a large number of lawyers marched to the SSP’s office, demanding both the SHO’s removal and the quashing of the case. However, the SSP also declined to meet with the protesting lawyers, prompting some of them to force their way into his office.
During the protest, some lawyers climbed onto the SSP’s vehicle while he remained inside his office. The protesters continued chanting slogans against the police, condemning the registration of the case under sections 468, 471, 420, 170, and 171 of the Pakistan Penal Code (PPC) (Crime No. 25/25).
According to the FIR lodged by Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Maqsood Ali Sahito, Advocate Bozdar fled the scene when action was taken against him. As a result, his Mehran car, which had a fancy number plate and tinted windows, was impounded.
