Uncertainty prevails in Pakistan over the fate of general elections as another resolution was submitted in the Senate seeking to delay general elections scheduled for February 8 due to “security challenges”.
The resolution was submitted by Senator Hidayatullah of the Independent Parliamentary Group in the Senate Secretariat.
The resolution stated that concerning the steps taken to comply with the constitutional obligation to conduct general elections across the country, this “House expresses deep concern over the continuous increase in the targeting of election candidates”.
It further highlighted the recent incidents of terrorism and violence across the country, including armed attacks in North Waziristan, Bajaur, Swabi and Turbat.
These incidents have created an atmosphere of fear and insecurity across the country, with candidates receiving threatening pamphlets at their residences and campaign offices, which has emerged as a disturbing dimension to the current security challenges, the resolution said.
This is not the first time that a resolution has been moved in Senate, earlier a resolution was passed with a majority demanding a delay in the elections citing the security situation.
The recent attacks on the candidates including in Turbat and Fazlur Rehman have raised security concerns for the next phases of election. Major political parties except the Pakistan People’s Party is running the election campaign.
The caretaker government is denying rumors of any delay in the elections, but the ground situation shows that the future of polls are still shady.
