The Gilgit Jail building has been converted into a library and opened to the public
After shifting from the Central Jail Sonikot adjacent to Gilgit Airport to a new building in Manawar on the outskirts of the city, this building was empty for five years, now finally a beautiful public library named Muhammad Ashraf Ali Memorial Library is located in this former prison building. has been established.
After the inauguration by Provincial Law Minister Syed Sohail Abbas, the library has been opened to the public. In the first phase, more than 5000 books on various topics including Islam, history and literature, besides Urdu and English journals were kept in this library. are
The library has also provided computers with internet facility for the students.

Speaking at the ceremony, Mr Wani said students, teachers and general public of the area would get modern education facilities in the building.
He said his focus was to promote education and awareness in the region as education was a key to change.
Speakers on the occasion lauded the conversion of the old jail into a library, stating that the building had been redundant for the last five years.
Adviser to GB Chief Minister on Information Technology Surya Zaman said the public library was an inspiring initiative to promote modern education facilities in the region.
