Till the last day, 1,162 people died and 3,554 were injured due to flood in Pakistan. Around 750,000 cattle were also killed and thousands of kilometers of roads were damaged, while the damage caused by the floods is much more than what is being reported.
It is obvious that dozens of areas have been cut off from land connectivity to other cities of Pakistan and as NDMA discovers other losses, reports are released that so many lives and so much money have been lost across the country in the last 24 hours. While the reality is much more brutal and gruesome.
3 days before today, on August 29, British Member of Parliament Claudia Webb said in her Twitter message that Pakistan has the largest number of glaciers after the North Pole, with a total of 7,253. All these great glaciers are melting rapidly. Pakistan is paying the price of our greed.
Here Claudia Webb’s statement needs to be understood in a broader context. A member of the British Parliament said that Pakistan is responsible for only 1% of the global emission of greenhouse gases, but Pakistan has joined the top 10 countries in climate change.
If we examine the world’s top countries responsible for greenhouse gases and carbon emissions, the top countries are the United States, China, Russia, Germany, and the United Kingdom. It has come under the influence of which Pakistan is also forced to bear the severe effects.
Glaciers refer to the great snowy mountains which have been increasing the beauty of Pakistan as well as serving as a vast water reservoir for us, but due to increasing air pollution and global temperature rise, these glaciers are melting rapidly. As a result, Pakistan was hit by calamities like floods.
Whenever there is an earthquake or calamity, it is said that it is from Allah, but at this point, mankind has to admit that the floods in Pakistan or the forest fires in Western countries including Australia are not heavenly. It cannot be called a disaster but it is the result of climate change.
There is a need for the countries responsible for carbon emissions to understand the suffering of the countries suffering from climate change including Pakistan and to gradually reduce the carbon emissions to save the developing countries from terrible climate change. Otherwise, all such countries will be held responsible for thousands of deaths.
