PESHAWAR: A landslide in Torkham, a town in Khyber District near the Pak-Afghan border, has buried at least 15 trucks and containers loaded with goods under debris, leaving at least eight people injured in the wee hours of Tuesday.
The Torkham border crossing is a significant trade route between Pakistan and Afghanistan where landslides often block highways, particularly in the mountainous areas. Unfortunately, this is not the first time that such an incident has occurred in the region.
Police officials have reported that dozens of firefighters and rescuers are working hard to save the lives of those affected by the landslide near Afghanistan. The officials have further stated that the landslide was triggered by lightning amid heavy rains.
The incident has caused significant damage to the trade route, and the authorities have already started the rescue operation. Rescue workers are transferring the injured to nearby hospitals, while volunteers have also joined the search for survivors.
Moreover, heavy machinery has already arrived at the scene to remove the massive landslide. Rescue 1122 teams from Khyber, Peshawar, Nowshehra, Charsadda, and Mardan are taking part in the relief operation, with the Deputy Commissioner of Khyber supervising the entire operation.
