Within an hour, Danny Yatoun’s helicopter landed at the royal palace in Amman, the capital of Jordan. Before the meeting with King Hussein, Danny Yatoun met with Jordanian Intelligence Chief Major General Sameh Batikhi and King Hussein’s Chief of Staff Major General Ali Shokri. Ali Shukri tells the details of this meeting as below:
“Danny Yatoon confessed to Major General Sameh Batikhi that the two men in Wadi Al-Seer police station were Mossad agents and that it was an assassination attempt. After this confession, when Shah Hussain attended the meeting, he was furious. He asked Danny Yatun, “How did you dare to carry out this operation on the land of Jordan?” Danny said while clarifying, “This action was not against Jordan, we did it against Hamas.” After hearing this, Shah Hussain got up from the meeting and summoned me to his office. King told me, to tell him to provide the antidote without delay, and give full details of the poison used. And also tell him that if Khalid dies, the peace treaty will also end.”
On the same day, Shah Hussain also made his threat public while addressing an event. Shah Hussain said:
“There has been a cowardly attack on the life of one of our sons. We are handling the matter very seriously. But I want to say that such acts are not acceptable in any way. We consider it an attack on all of us. And we know how to deal with it.”
A superficial person might think that there is no threat in this. Because we consider some phrases like “ Aeent Ka Jawab Pathar sy dena” as a threat, we explain what these phrases mean. When a world leader speaks, analysts first consider his choice of words. Because even his simple words have a deep meaning. For example, take the first sentence of Shah Hussain:
“There has been a cowardly attack on the life of one of our sons.”
Its meaning is that the father never lets go of the attack on his son. So by declaring Khalid Meshaal as his son, it was clear that Shah Hussain would not let this incident go without teaching him a lesson. The second sentence is:
“We are handling this incident very seriously.”
This phrase suggests that the response to this will not be emotional and snappy, but will be thoughtful and thorough. Look at the third sentence:
“Such a situation is not acceptable under any circumstances.”
It is being said that if we suppress this issue, it will happen again tomorrow, and maybe something bigger than this, so this first attack is not acceptable in any case, the response will come. It is being said in the last sentence:
“We see it as an attack on all of us. We know how to fight back.”
This is the most powerful sentence. In it, King Hussein made it clear that this was an attack not only on Hamas but also on Jordan. And “all of us” means quite clearly that we are all one. There is no difference between us. Also, in the next part of this sentence, it is said that there is no confusion on our side as to what to do. How to do, we know what we have to do. Then, most importantly, Benjamin Netanyahu had sent a message through Mossad Chief Danny Yaton that we were providing the antidote, you suppress the matter.
Shah Hussain made the entire issue public in his speech at the ceremony and made it clear to Benjamin Netanyahu that this issue would not be suppressed and that I would handle it myself.
On the same day, King Hussain ordered that Khalid Meshaal be immediately transferred to King Hussain Medical City. And every possible effort should be made to save his life. But a strange situation arose. As soon as King Hussain’s order came, the police cordoned off the Islamic Hospital of Oman. The authorities entered Khalid Meshaal’s room to transfer him to Al Hussain Medical City. Muhammad Nizal of Hamas was there. He was not aware of King Hussain’s speech and order. So he should think that the police are getting Khalid Meshaal to suppress the matter.
So Muhammad Nizal started resisting that he would not allow Khalid Meshaal to be taken away. When Hamas leader Musa Abu Marzouq found out about it, he immediately contacted Jordan’s intelligence chief, Major General Sameh Batikhi. Batikhi said that the king’s order’s compliance was necessary. Abu Marzouq expressed his fear that Mashaal will be out of our reach so we will not know what is going on. We will be left at the mercy of the authorities. On this, Sameh Batikhi informed them that this would not happen. A member of Hamas and a family member will be present in Khalid Meshaal’s room at all times. So whatever happens will happen before your eyes. Thus the transfer of Khalid to Al Hussain Medical City became possible.
Khalid Meshaal was shifted to Al Hussain Medical City under tight security. A large team of doctors started all possible efforts to save him, but they knew that it would not be possible without an antidote. Therefore, on the same day, King Hussein contacted American President Bill Clinton and informed him of the whole situation and demanded that he put pressure on Israel for the immediate provision of the antidote. King Hussein’s Chief of Staff Major General Ali Shukri says:
“King Hussein’s phone call surprised Bill Clinton at first. Clinton asked King, “How could he do that?” And in great anger said to Netanyahu “This man is impossible” ۔King informed Clinton that if Israel did not provide full details of the distribution of antidote and poison and if anything happened to Khaled, then consider the peace agreement as over.
Paul McGeough, author of the book Kill Khalid says:
“King Hussein was so angry while talking to Clinton that day that his heat was enough to peel the paint off the walls.”
King Hussain’s anger is understandable. The question is why American President Bill Clinton was angry. The reason was that Clinton and the United States as states were the guarantors of the agreement reached between Jordan and Israel. It is as if Mossad’s action was a simultaneous attack on both Jordan and the United States. Mossad as guarantor had put Bill Clinton and the US in an embarrassing situation. If Khalid died and the agreement was terminated, what would be the value of America’s “guarantee”? And going forward, how can anyone rely on any guarantee from the United States? Paul McGeough explains Clinton’s seriousness and anger over the incident:
“Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu tried to talk to Bill Clinton on the phone that same day, not only did Clinton refuse to pick up the phone, but the entire Clinton administration became indifferent to Netanyahu, making it clear to Netanyahu that You are alone in the matter, now do whatever you have to do yourself, we will not help you. So that night there was an important meeting in Tel Aviv. A member who attended this meeting told me that in this meeting it was said, the situation is so Worse, if this person dies, there will be no other option but to bring him out of the grave and bring him back to life.”
“It seems that with the death of Khalid Meshaal, we will face an impossible situation”.
