Ushna Shah, a Pakistani-Canadian actress known for her work in film and television, has shared her experiences with prosopagnosia, commonly referred to as face blindness.
This condition makes it difficult for individuals to recognize faces, a challenge that Ushna has increasingly faced over time.
In an Instagram story, she expressed that what started as a light-hearted issue has transformed into a frustrating reality. She often struggles to recognize people, even in familiar environments. “What was once a joke has evolved into a frustrating experience over the years, and I am sure I am not alone,” she wrote, highlighting her message for both current acquaintances and future connections.
Ushna clarified that if she fails to recognize someone during an encounter, it’s due to her condition and not a reflection of her feelings or care. She urged everyone to understand that a lack of recognition is not personal.
What is Prosopagnosia?
Prosopagnosia is a neuro-ophthalmic disorder characterized by difficulty in perceiving or recognizing faces. The term originates from Greek: “prosop” meaning “face,” “a” indicating “not,” and “gnosia” meaning “know.”
Most individuals with prosopagnosia are born with the condition, which typically persists throughout their lives. It can significantly impact daily activities; in severe cases, individuals may struggle to recognize family members, close friends, or partners.
