US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has said that President Donald Trump prefers to reach an agreement with Iran and would be willing to meet the country’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, should he express a desire for talks.
Speaking in an interview on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference, Rubio said President Trump is prepared to meet anyone, as he believes global challenges can only be resolved through dialogue.
He stated that if Ayatollah Ali Khamenei were to request a meeting with President Trump even as early as tomorrow, such a meeting could take place.
Rubio clarified that this would not imply agreement with the Iranian leader, but rather reflects Trump’s belief that engagement and dialogue are the means through which disputes are addressed.
Commenting on the decision to deploy a second aircraft carrier to the Middle East, Rubio described the move as a precautionary measure, adding that its purpose is to ensure Iran does not take any step that could trigger a wider conflict.
