After battling a rise in vector-borne diseases and viral infections, Karachi is now facing a surge in pneumonia cases, attributed to changes in the port city’s weather.
According to the emergency in-charge at the National Institute of Child Health (NICH), around 30 pneumonia cases are being reported daily. Meanwhile, Dr. Imran Sarwar from Civil Hospital said that the hospital is seeing 15 to 20 cases per day. These figures follow a significant rise in cases of dengue, malaria, chikungunya, and other viral infections reported across hospitals in the city.
Dr. Khalid Shafi, Secretary-General of the Pakistan Paediatrics Association, noted that pneumonia cases generally peak during October, November, and December. He emphasized that while vaccines are available for certain types of pneumonia, the disease continues to pose a serious risk, especially for children under two and adults over 65.
According to the Sindh Health Department, 411 suspected cases of chikungunya have been reported in Sindh, with 153 confirmed through diagnosis. Additionally, Sindh has seen 1,724 cases of dengue this year, with 1,484 cases recorded in Karachi alone, along with one dengue-related death.
The department also reported that Sindh recorded 222,239 malaria cases this year, with 1,768 diagnosed in Karachi.
