The sugar prices have been increased across the country as the commodity is being sold at Rs160 per kg in the retail markets.
In December, the price of sugar per kg was Rs100; it is now Rs160 due to what is reportedly an upsurge in sugar smuggling.
According to the Sensitive Price Index (SPI) for the week ending on July 13, sugar retail price in Karachi was hovering at Rs138-150 per kg as compared to Rs128-135 in the preceding week ending June 22.
Sources claim that a network is accused of smuggling thousands of tonnes of sugar into Afghanistan during that time.
On the other hand, the sugar is also not available at the Utility Stores as the prices of the sugar at the store is being sold at the subsidised Rs90 per kg.
This sharp increase has put a strain on household budgets and raised concerns among residents who heavily rely on sugar as a staple ingredient in their daily lives.
