KARACHI: Local Government Department of Sindh has established District Municipal Corporation (DMC) in Keamari, which was earlier declared the city’s seventh district.

According to a notification, the new District Municipal Corporation will be known as DMC Keamari. It includes the areas of Baldia Town, SITE, Fish Harbour along with Keamari Zone.

Sindh Local Government Department issued the notification earlier to notify the development in the Keamari zone. The establishment of district has been challenged in the court by PTI leader Aamir Liaquat Hussain.

With the establishment of the DMC in Keamari District, there will be local bodies elections in the new district as well. District Keamari will see witness elections for local bodies and the people will elect district chairman and members.

Earlier this month, the Sindh High Court (SHC) issued notices to the Sindh chief secretary, local government secretary and others on a petition challenging the provincial government’s decision of carving the seventh district out of Karachi.

A two-judge SHC bench was hearing the petition filed by PTI MNA Aamir Liaquat Hussain who questioned the formation of Keamari district. The court directed the official respondents to submit their comments by the next hearing.

The PTI leader stated in his petition that the provincial government’s decision to create Keamari district by bifurcating District West is biased. He said the local government was not taken into confidence over the creation of the new district.

In August, a meeting of the Sindh cabinet chaired by Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah approved to make Keamari Town the seventh district of the city.

said that the provincial government was working on a new local government system and will make new amendments. The Muttahida Quami Movement (MQM) has opposed the formation of a new district in Karachi.

With the addition of a new district, the number of the administrative districts has gone up from six to seven including South, West, East, Central, Malir, Korangi and Keamari districts.
