KARACHI: Several major roads and streets in different areas of the metropolis have been submerged with filthy water owing to the collapse of its drainage system, causing inconvenience to motorists and pedestrians.
Local government, including Karachi Electric, Sui Southern Gas Company, Water Board, Sindh Building Control, KDA, Sindh Solid Waste, Commissioner, no department seems serious in fulfilling its responsibility. Public affairs have reached alarming proportions as departments have been run by statements and claims.
The main streets that run parallel to Korangi industrial area’s main road, from Chamra Chowrangi to Vita Chowrangi are inundated with sewage. In different areas, a number of industries, mostly food items are located and owing to sewage overflow extreme unhygienic conditions prevail.
The stagnant filthy water has caused extensive damage to the street and people working in the nearby industries are the worst sufferers. However, the Municipal Services Department of the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation has responsible for cleaning the drain, failed to maintain the roads for traffic.
Citizens said although they have lodged a number of complaints with the KWSB officials concerned and UCs, none of them have, so far, taken measures to rectify the fault responsible for choked gutters.
District Council Karachi, Korangi District, Central District, East, Malir and most of the internal and external roads of the Southern District are in a state of disrepair.
The concerned department also failed to collect and dump garbage at the designated landfill in a proper manner. The residents have to bear stench emanating from garbage littered in different areas of the city.
Out of the 14,000 tons of garbage generated daily in the city, only 40 percent is picked up. The rest of the garbage causes severe rot and epidemics as well as pollution.
Most of the city’s roads have been destroyed and traffic jams have led to a worrying rise in physical ailments, including mental illness and irritability among citizens, while the administration has failed to resolve the issues.
Citizens urged the authorities to come to their rescue and order an immediate overhaul of the sewerage system and other issues.
