A shocking case of medical negligence has surfaced at Faisalabad Institute of Cardiology, where a pair of surgical scissors was allegedly left inside a patient’s chest during open-heart surgery.
The incident came to light after the patient suffered severe discomfort for weeks and later underwent a second operation to remove the instrument.
According to Dr. Nadeem, MS of Faisalabad Institute of Cardiology, 22-year-old Saqleen, a resident of Toba Tek Singh, underwent the operation.
However, due to the negligence of the staff nurses, the scissors were left inside the patient’s body during the procedure.
After enduring discomfort for three weeks, the patient underwent a second surgery to have the scissors removed.
The MS said that the investigation revealed negligence on the part of the staff nurses, who had failed to complete the proper counting of surgical instruments after the operation, an act considered serious negligence.
He further added that the services of both responsible staff nurses have been terminated, and a report has been sent to the Secretary of Health for further action.
