DALLAS: US President Donald Trump has promised to give $5,000 to every adult American citizen if the Republican Party retains control of Congress following the midterm elections.
Speaking at a Republican midterm convention in Dallas, Trump referred to the proposal as the “Trump Dividend.” However, he did not provide details on how the payments would be funded or when they would be distributed.
The proposal has already raised questions among some Republicans. Texas Congressman Chip Roy questioned where the government would find the more than $1 trillion needed to finance the plan.
According to the US Census Bureau, there are approximately 240 million adult citizens in the United States. At $5,000 per person, the proposed payments would cost the government roughly $1.2 trillion, potentially putting significant additional pressure on the US budget deficit.
