ISLAMABAD: The Elections Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has announced the schedule for the by-election on the cant Islamabad’s mayor seat.
The post went vacant after Sheikh Anser Aziz resigned on December 1. According to the schedule, the by-poll will take place on December 28.
The appointments of Islamabad’s district election commissioner as Returning Officer (RO), regional election commissioner as Deputy Returning Officer (DRO), district and sessions judge as Appellate Authority West were also made by the commission.
The ECP said that public notices for the submission of nomination papers will be issued on December 9 and candidates will be allowed to submit their papers till December 11. Complaints against nomination papers will be accepted by December 14, while scrutiny will be completed by the 16th of the month.
Appeals against the particulars of the candidates could be filed on December 17, ECP added. The election candidates could receive back their nomination papers on December 21. The commission will allot election symbols on December 22 ahead of the polls.
Earlier, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) had postponed by-elections till 31 January 2021 due to the worsening coronavirus situation in the country. The elections on two vacant National Assembly seats and six Provincial Assembly seats postponed till January 31, 2021.
The ECP’s decision came on the back of a recommendation made by the National Command and Operation Center (NCOC).
As per details, an important meeting was held under the chairmanship of the Chief Election Commissioner in which members, including Secretary Election Commission, Secretary Local Government Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Secretary Local Government, Secretary Interior and Secretary Law participated.
