Residents of Karachi’s Shamsi Society demand urgent action over sewerage, infrastructure problems

Residents of Shamsi Society in Karachi have been facing serious civic challenges for an extended period due to the alleged neglect of municipal authorities and administrative mismanagement.

Sewerage water has remained accumulated on roads within the locality for more than a month, causing significant inconvenience and raising public health concerns.

According to local residents, the deteriorating state of infrastructure and the failure of the sewerage system in Shamsi Society and adjoining areas have resulted in stagnant wastewater collecting at multiple locations. Frequent ruptures in sewerage and water supply pipelines have led to foul odours and environmental pollution, increasing fears of the spread of waterborne and infectious diseases.

In the neighbouring Rifah-e-Aam Society, ageing underground sewerage lines beneath the main thoroughfare have reportedly collapsed due to years of deterioration. As a result, the road surface has been severely damaged at several points, creating hazardous conditions for motorists and pedestrians.

Residents also report that dust generated from the deteriorated roadway has contributed to an increase in respiratory health issues.

Municipal authorities had previously completed a project to install paving blocks along the main road of Rifah-e-Aam Society. However, faults in the underground sewerage infrastructure have since undermined the newly developed road, causing extensive damage and rendering portions of it unusable.

The deterioration of underground sewerage lines has also affected the area’s water supply network. Residents have expressed concern that contaminated sewerage water may be seeping into clean water pipelines, posing a serious risk to public health and safety.

Local residents have called upon the relevant authorities to take immediate notice of the situation and implement lasting solutions to address the sewerage, water supply and infrastructure problems affecting the community.
