ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan has ruled out any compromise on supporting or voting in favour of the proposed 28th Constitutional Amendment in exchange for the release of party founder Imran Khan. He maintained that the issue was neither discussed at the parliamentary party meeting nor included in its agenda.
Speaking to reporters in Islamabad, Barrister Gohar said Imran Khan remained firm in his stance and was unwilling to compromise on his principles. According to the PTI chairman, the former prime minister has said he is prepared to spend 100 years in prison rather than abandon his principles.
Barrister Gohar added that the parliamentary party had expressed full confidence in the party leadership. He said the recommendations and proposals put forward during the meeting would be forwarded to both Leaders of the Opposition.
Commenting on the creation of new provinces, the PTI chairman said he supported the idea but stressed that any decision on the matter should reflect the will and wishes of the people.
Meanwhile, PTI Senator Barrister Ali Zafar presented a different account of the parliamentary party meeting during an interview with a private television channel. He said the proposed 28th Constitutional Amendment had been discussed during the meeting.
According to Barrister Ali Zafar, some party members suggested that the possibility of considering the amendment should not be dismissed if it could help secure relief or make progress towards Imran Khan’s release.
However, he clarified that no final decision had been taken regarding the proposed constitutional amendment.
The differing accounts have drawn attention to the issue within PTI. While Barrister Gohar denied that the amendment had been discussed at the parliamentary party meeting, Barrister Ali Zafar maintained that the matter had come under discussion. The party’s final position on the proposed amendment remains undecided, according to their statements.
