Following the Ramadan package comparison, a massive uptick has been noted in the cost of subsidized ghee at utility stores.
According to media reports, the subsidized ghee price has risen by 58 rupees per kilogram. Consequently, consumers under the Benazir Income Support Program (BISP) will now pay 393 rupees per kilogram for ghee, effective immediately.
Previously, during the Ramadan package, utility stores provided ghee at 335 rupees per kilogram. Despite the increase, there remains a subsidy of 70 rupees per kilogram on ghee.
Insiders attribute this price hike to the need for procuring new stock at higher rates, highlighting the challenges in maintaining affordable prices amidst market fluctuations.
In a separate development, the utility stores in Pakistan have witnessed a historic surge in sales, reportedly due to the impact of government subsidies on essential commodities.
During the fiscal year 2022-23, utility stores recorded sales of Rs. 137.15 billion without subsidized items, whereas the sales of utilized subsidies were recorded at Rs. 151 billion, posting a net profit of Rs 764 million.
