The Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) has announced three days of mourning on the death of Senator Taj Haider, who was the general secretary of the Party and passed away on Tuesday. He was 84.
All political activities of the PPP will be suspended for three days.
Taj Haider’s funeral prayers will be offered at Imambargah Yasrab, Defence Society, Phase 4, after Zohrain prayers on Wednesday, April 9 (today).
According to the family, Haider had been under treatment at a local hospital for the last few days.
PPP Chairman Bilawal-Bhutto Zardari, Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah, and Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi expressed their grief and sorrow over the sad demise of Senator Taj Haider and offered condolences to his family.
Who was Taj Haider?
Born 9 March 1942, Haider was a left-wing politician, nationalist, playwright, mathematician, versatile scholar, and Marxist intellectual. He was one of the founding members of the PPP and had been the party’s general secretary since 2010. He was re-elected to the Senate of Pakistan for a six-year tenure, from March 2021 to March 2027.
A mathematician and scientist by profession, Haider provided vital leadership in the formative years of Pakistan’s atomic bomb projects in the 1970s. He is also noted for his writing of political plays for the Pakistan Television (PTV) from 1979 to 1985.
At the age of 80, he tied the knot for the fourth time with TV anchor Prof Naheed Wasi.
