There are news that a case under anti-terrorism act has been registered against PML-N leaders Javed Latif and Maryam Aurangzeb in PTI led Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, while the federal and the Punjab governments have come face to face over the registration of a case in Lahore against both of the leaders. The federal government has transferred the CCPO Lahore who had registered the case. On the other hand, PTI Chairman Imran Khan has announced the final round of his movement against the government from coming Saturday, while the government has started preparations to stop the PTI march by state force.
This age-old cat-and-mouse game between the government and the opposition is once again at its peak, and that too at a time when a big part of the country has been badly affected by the worst floods. Reports indicate that one-third of the country has submerged while the Sindh province is inundated 70 percent. Though the water has subsided in most of the flood-affected areas ,but in the lower and plain areas including Sindh, the drainage of flood water has not yet been arranged, due to which various diseases have invaded these areas and created a new problem for the victims.
In addition, the country’s economy has been deteriorating since a long time, while the devastating floods and monsoon rains have further damaged the already under-pressure economy by putting a heavy burden of losses on a large scale. At the same time, foreign exchange reserves of the country are decreasing day to day and current account deficit is out of control. This situation has strengthened the dollar against the rupee, and each passing day heralds a fresh rise in the dollar’s value, adding further shocks to Pakistan’s fragile and debt-ridden economy.
This whole situation has left the nation in a distressed situation. Sharp increase in the prices of essential commodities, taxes and utility bills have made life miserable for the people. What this scenario of the country demands from the political leaders, they, unfortunately, seem to be contradicting it and everyone cares more about their own political and group interests than the problems of the nation.
The situation in which the country is stuck in the midst of difficulties and crises requires that the government and the opposition should keep aside all political disputes for sometime and suspend all political activities until these emergency situations are end. However, the ground situation is totally different, even during devastating rains and floods, both sides seem to prefer mutual disputes and still do not seem ready to stop from this approach.
This sad situation of confrontation between the government and the opposition should end now, these pointless, selfish and political battles have weighed heavily on the nation. These fruitless political battles has brought political instability, intolerance, hatred, enmity and economic deterioration in the country. Politicians should act with prudence, magnanimity, tolerance and wisdom. If this state of intolerance and conflict continues it will cause an irreversible loss to the country.
