ISLAMABAD: Former federal minister Anwar Aziz Chaudhry passed away on Sunday in Lahore after a prolonged illness. He was aged 89.
He was the father of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader Daniyal Aziz. His daughter-in-law Mehnaz Akber Aziz, who is an MNA, announced his passing away on Twitter.
Anwar Chaudhry joined politics in 1963 and served as a federal minister in former prime minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto’s cabinet. He has served as Federal Minister of Railway and Law and Defence.
Chaudhry was a seasoned politician and was known as the father of politics in Shakargarh, a tehsil headquarters of Punjab’s Narowal city. He also represented Pakistan in the 1948 Olympics as a swimmer. He contested the 2018 elections as an independent candidate.
Earlier, the mother of former prime minister Nawaz Sharif and Leader of Opposition in National Assembly Shehbaz Sharif passed away in London on Sunday. Begum Shamim Akhtar had left for London earlier this year in February to be alongside her son. She had reportedly being ill for some time. She was aged 90 and will be buried at the family’s residence in Jati Umrah.
