Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) has selected former Ethiopian Airlines chief executive Tewolde Gebremariam as its new chief executive officer as the national carrier moves forward with its post-privatization revival plan.
It should be noted that a consortium has paid Rs10 billion to the government and committed Rs80 billion in fresh investment to strengthen PIA’s finances, upgrade its fleet, expand routes and improve operations.
Overall, the group has pledged Rs180 billion, including Rs55 billion for a 75% stake and Rs125 billion for long-term investment.
Officials said Tewolde’s appointment is subject to completion of mandatory security clearances before an official announcement is made.
A senior PIA official confirmed his selection, while a key shareholder described him as an experienced aviation leader known for successfully transforming airlines.
During his tenure at Ethiopian Airlines, Tewolde played a key role in expanding the carrier’s global network, increasing its market presence and developing Addis Ababa into a major aviation hub. His appointment is expected to bring international expertise to PIA’s restructuring efforts.
