Despite allocating billions of rupees annually to its national immunization efforts, Pakistan has yet to achieve full vaccination coverage across the country.
Data indicates that none of the provinces have succeeded in reaching the target of 100% immunization for the 12 major preventable diseases. Islamabad and Punjab lead with a 90% coverage rate, followed by Sindh at 84%, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa at 79%, and Balochistan trailing behind with just 54%.
According to Dr. Sofia, Director General of Immunization, the program is showing consistent progress. She noted, “Even developed nations have not achieved complete immunization.
However, we are aiming to surpass 95%. A few years ago, our national coverage stood at just 54%, so there has been notable improvement.”
Dr. Rashida Syed, District Health Officer for Islamabad, highlighted the capital’s strong performance, saying, “We’ve managed to cross 90% coverage, thanks in part to significant political support. With continued efforts, we hope to reach 100%.”
Meanwhile, Minister of State for Health, Mukhtar Bharath, stressed the need for ongoing initiatives to boost immunization levels nationwide. While Punjab shows promise with a 90% rate, other areas still face substantial challenges. “Until provinces like Sindh reach the 90% mark, controlling vaccine-preventable diseases will remain a major hurdle,” he stated.
