Pakistan and Chinese companies have agreed to jointly produce lithium-ion batteries in Pakistan under a new industrial cooperation initiative aimed at strengthening clean energy infrastructure and reducing reliance on imports.
The agreement was signed between Seagulls Group (Pakistan) and Hebei Juhang Energy Technology Group (China) through a memorandum of understanding (MoU).
Under the MoU, both sides will collaborate in advanced lithium-ion batteries, energy storage systems, electric vehicle charging infrastructure, and other clean energy-related technologies.
Prime Minister’s Special Assistant on Industries and Production, Haroon Akhtar Khan, while addressing a signing ceremony held at Movenpick Hotel in Islamabad’s Centaurus, congratulated both companies on what he called a historic partnership, saying the initiative would play a vital role in Pakistan’s industrial development, technological advancement, and increased investment inflows.
He noted that China has achieved global leadership in electric vehicles, battery technology, renewable energy, artificial intelligence, and advanced industrial sectors through long-term planning and commitment to quality, calling it a model for developing countries.
He added that Pakistan is proud to work with China as a trusted partner in building future industries.
He further said that the rapid growth of solar energy use in Pakistan has increased the need for reliable energy storage systems.
Local manufacturing of lithium-ion batteries would reduce import dependency, strengthen clean energy supply, create skilled employment opportunities, enhance local engineering capacity, and support the growth of allied industries.
