SOUTHAMPTON: Pakistan was struggling at 126-5 when rain stopped play and later on bad light abandoned first day of the second Test at Rose Bowl Cricket Stadium.
England’s James Anderson had taken 2-35 from 15 overs to move to within eight wickets of becoming the first paceman with 600 in Tests. After winning the toss, Pakistani skipper Azhar Ali chose to bat first.
James Anderson strikes early as Shan Masood got out on just 6 runs put the tourists under immense pressure. Abid Ali and Azhar Ali carried the inning for Pakistan quite well as the right-handed duo scored 72 runs together.
Anderson was again there to produce a breakthrough for Pakistan as he sent back skipper Azhar for 20. All of England’s four quicks enjoyed success, with only Pakistan opener Abid Ali — dropped twice in the slips — offering prolonged resistance during an innings of 60.
Asad Shafiq once again failed to score as the veteran batsman managed to add just 5 runs to the team’s total. The long-awaited return of Fawad Alam ended with a duck.
Babar Azam (25*) and Mohammad Rizwan (4*) remained not out on an opening day and will resume inning for green shirts tomorrow. Tomorrow 98 overs will be bowled.
