How Hangor-class submarines reshape Pakistan’s undersea warfare doctrine

Pakistan Navy Hangor Class Submarine

ISLAMABAD: The induction of China-built Hangor-class submarines is set to significantly enhance Pakistan Navy’s underwater warfare capability, marking a major shift in the regional maritime security balance, defence sources said.

The new-generation submarines, equipped with Air-Independent Propulsion (AIP) systems, advanced stealth features, and modern combat management systems, are expected to provide Pakistan with extended underwater endurance and improved operational flexibility.

Defence analysts say the Hangor-class represents a major leap in undersea warfare capability, allowing the Pakistan Navy to conduct long-duration submerged operations while remaining difficult to detect. The platform is also designed to carry advanced torpedoes and cruise missiles, strengthening the country’s deep-strike maritime potential.

Experts note that the addition of these submarines will enhance deterrence in the Arabian Sea, particularly in the context of evolving regional naval dynamics and increasing strategic competition in surrounding waters.

The AIP technology enables the submarines to remain submerged for longer periods without surfacing, significantly improving stealth and survivability during operations. Combined with modern sensor and weapons systems, the platform is expected to play a key role in strengthening Pakistan’s sea denial and maritime defence strategy.

Officials believe the Hangor-class programme reflects Pakistan’s continued focus on modernising its naval fleet and maintaining a credible underwater deterrent capability in the region.
