The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has launched a new initiative to solarize thousands of schools and mosques across the province.
Under this ambitious project, 1,100 schools and 3,050 mosques will transition to solar energy within the current year. Additionally, business centers will be connected with solar mini-grids as part of the comprehensive energy plan.
Haji Iqbal Afridi, Member of the National Assembly representing the tribal district of Khyber, shared these plans during a meeting focused on monitoring the progress of ongoing solarization projects in the district. The initiative falls under the oversight of PEDO (Pakhtunkhwa Energy Development Organization), a subsidiary of the Energy & Power Department KP.
A significant meeting convened with designated focal persons from elected representatives of all national and provincial assemblies of Khyber district was directed by Secretary E&P Nisar Ahmad Khan. The session was attended by Chief Executive PEDO Engineer Riaz Ahmed Jan, Chief Planning Officer Energy Department Dr. Mohammad Kashif Khan, Project Director of Solar Energy Engineer Asfand yar Khan, and a representative from NRTC, Aamir Afridi.
During the briefing, Project Director Engineer Asfand yar Khan highlighted three major solar energy projects underway in Khyber district, including the establishment of a mini-grid in Bara Bazaar, solarization of 1,100 schools, and 3,500 mosques. He noted that transmission line work is nearing completion and affirmed that these projects are scheduled for completion by year-end.
The meeting also included detailed discussions on the installation of solar systems and other logistical aspects, focusing on the identification and inclusion of mosques and schools in the solarization program.
