One arrested in motorway gang-rape, confesses to crime

LAHORE: The Punjab police have arrested another accused in the Lahore Motorway gang-rape, who has also confessed to have committed the crime, however key suspect Abid Ali remaining in the wind.

According to details, Anti-Organised Crime Cell (CIA) arrested the accused, identified as Shafqat, from Depalpur after being identified by Waqarul Hassan – one of the two prime accused who courted arrest on Sunday, denying any involvement in the case.

A police spokesperson has informed that Shafqat Ali, with whom key suspect Abid used to commit crimes, confessed to gang-raping a woman on the Lahore-Sialkot motorway on Sept 9 even before his DNA test was carried out.

Shortly after the arrest, Punjab Chief Minister Usman Buzdar confirmed that the DNA of the arrested the accused had matched with the sample obtained from the rape survivor.

“Our entire team is constantly trying to arrest the accused Abid Ali, whose arrest is expected soon, God willing,” Buzdar said on Twitter.

Earlier today (Monday), the brother-in-law of accused Waqarul Hassan had surrendered to the police. Abbas, a resident of Sheikhupura, also denied his involvement in the heinous crime and pleaded innocence.

The DNA samples obtained from Shafqat have been sent to the laboratory for testing, a police spokesperson informed.
