Following the confirmation of two Nipah virus cases in West Bengal, India, on January 28, 2026, health authorities across the region, including the Sindh Health Department and the Pakistan Ministry of National Health Services, have issued a high-priority advisory.

While no cases have been reported in Pakistan, the virus carries a high fatality rate (40% to 75%), making early detection and prevention critical.

Symptoms of Nipah Virus in humans can range from fever and headache to respiratory distress and neurological complications. Early recognition of these symptoms and timely medical care are critical to reducing severity

Understanding Transmission

  • Nipah is a zoonotic virus, meaning it jumps from animals to humans. The natural reservoir is the fruit bat (flying fox).
  • Direct contact with infected bats or pigs, or their bodily fluids (saliva, urine).
  • Eating fruits or drinking raw date palm sap contaminated by infected bats.
  • Close contact with the secretions or excretions of an infected person (respiratory droplets, blood, or urine).

Clinical Symptoms & Timeline
The incubation period (time from infection to symptoms) typically ranges from 4 to 14 days, but can extend up to 45 days.

Early Symptoms

  • High fever and persistent headache.
  • Respiratory distress (cough, sore throat, difficulty breathing).
  • Myalgia (severe muscle pain) and vomiting.

Severe/Advanced Symptoms

  • Encephalitis (Brain Swelling): The hallmark of Nipah.
  • Dizziness, drowsiness, and mental confusion.
  • Seizures and altered consciousness.
  • Coma: Severe cases can progress to a coma within 24 to 48 hours.

Prevention & Safety Advisory
As there is currently no licensed vaccine or specific cure for Nipah virus, prevention is the only defense.

  • Do not consume raw date palm juice (toddy) or sap. Always boil it before drinking.
  • Thoroughly wash all fruits. Avoid eating fruit found on the ground or those with visible “bat bites.”
  • Frequent handwashing with soap and water, especially after visiting sick individuals or handling animals.
  • Stay away from areas where fruit bats are known to live or congregate.

For Healthcare Settings:
Suspected patients must be kept in isolated wards with airborne and contact precautions.

Current Status in Pakistan
The Government of Pakistan has implemented 100% screening for all passengers arriving at international airports, seaports, and land borders. No individual is allowed entry without health clearance.

If you or someone you know develops a sudden fever and respiratory issues after traveling from a high-risk region, contact your nearest government hospital immediately and inform them of your travel history.
