February 13, 2021

ISLAMABAD: The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has notified an increase of Rs 1.95 per unit in power tariff putting an additional burden of Rs200 billion on consumers.

The approval came on a federal government request for the application of a uniform schedule of tariff for all distribution companies of ex-Wapda along with a targeted tariff differential subsidy of Rs185 billion to ensure uniform tariff.

According to the NEPRA, the tariff hike will be applicable to all consumers including lifeline consumers using 50 units in a month. Per unit average tariff has gone up to Rs16.33 from Rs16.33 following the increase.

NEPRA said K-Electric consumers are excepted from the tariff increase. The new power rates will be applicable after the issuance of a notification by the federal government in this regard.

On February 10, the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) had notified Rs 1.53 per unit increase in tariff for the month of December 2020 under the fuel price adjustments (FCA) mechanism.

As per details, the authority had concluded a public hearing on January 27 into the petition filed by the Central Power Purchase Agency (CPPA).on behalf of XWDISCOs.

The CPPA had sought a raise of Rs 1.80 per unit increase in the tariff having an impact of Rs 13.6 billion under the monthly fuel adjustment mechanism. Though, the authority notified Rs.1.53 per unit increase having an impact of Rs 11.6 billion.

“The FCA of December 20 shall be charged in the billing month of February 2021 to all consumer categories of XWDISCOs, except lifeline consumers having consumption up to 50 units and would remain applicable only for one month,” the notification. The FCA will also not be applicable to KE consumers.
