The National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) has introduced Pakistan’s first “dematerialized identity card”, after which citizens will no longer need to keep their national identity card or its photocopy in their pockets and this digital identity card can be downloaded completely free of cost through the “Pak ID” mobile app.
According to NADRA spokesperson Syed Shabahat, citizens will upload a picture of the QR code of their current identity card on the Pak ID app, after which the verification will be completed within 30 minutes and the digital card will be available in the app’s vault.
He added that if the mobile phone is lost or stolen, the digital card can be restored by logging in to the app with a new phone.
According to NADRA, the purpose of the digital identity card is to increase the speed of work in government offices and provide facilities to citizens according to modern requirements.
However, the decision to accept it as an alternative depends on other institutions.
Additionally, NADRA is also considering introducing digital availability of Family Registration Certificate (FRC) and Child Registration Certificate (CRC) on the PakID app soon.
