LAHORE: Senate Deputy Chairman (DC) Saleem Mandviwalla has asserted that ‘production warrants’ will be issued if National Accountability Bureau (NAB) Chairman Justice (retd) Javed Iqbal refuses to appear in the upper house.
Speaking to journalists in Lahore today (Sunday), Saleem Mandviwalla reaffirmed his announcement that the NAB chairman will be summoned to the Senate to answer questions about the accountability watchdog’s alleged illegal actions.
He also talked about the list of complaints the Senate has received from different people pertaining to NAB’s maltreatment. Mandviwalla blamed political parties for not making amendments to the NAB ordinance ‘because of which it started intervening in every institution of the country’.
“The government held several meetings with the Opposition regarding the matter of NAB’s ordinance but they could not come to an agreement,” the Deputy Chairman added.
He further said, “As a result, the ordinance lapsed and NAB was given a chance to intervene in every institution of the country, including private businesses and bureaucracy.”
Mandviwalla pointed out that businessmen had nothing to do with NAB but it issued notices to people for even selling a private plot or importing something. “NAB is intervening in everything now, including issues related to under-invoicing, and import and import cases, which is not its domain,” he added.
He reiterated that all of the hearings of the Senate committee will be held before the media in which all of NAB’s alleged wrongdoings will be discussed including. He alleged that all government departments including the FIA and Anti-Corruption Establishment were following NAB’s directions.
