Meta discontinues end-to-end encryption for Instagram DMs

Instagram has officially discontinued its optional end-to-end encryption (E2EE) feature for direct messages worldwide, the company confirmed this week. With the change, all direct messages on the platform now default to standard encryption.

Previously, Instagram users could opt into end-to-end encrypted chats in Messenger-powered DMs, a setting that prevented even Meta from accessing message contents. As of this month, that option has been removed globally. All DMs, including text, photos, videos, and voice notes, are now protected by standard encryption in transit and at rest on Meta’s servers. This means Meta retains the technical ability to access message content.

A Meta spokesperson said the move aims to “standardize safety tools and infrastructure across Instagram DMs,” citing improvements to features like spam detection, reporting, and integration with other safety systems that require server-side access.

For regular users, the day-to-day DM experience will not change visually. However, messages sent or received are no longer shielded from potential access by Meta. This applies retroactively to existing chats that were previously end-to-end encrypted.

Privacy advocates note that while standard encryption still protects against external interception, it does not provide the same level of confidentiality as E2EE, where only the sender and recipient hold decryption keys.

What Users Should Do
Meta advises users who relied on E2EE to preserve sensitive conversations to download a copy of their information. Important chats can be saved via the in-app download tool:

1. Go to Settings and privacy > Accounts Center > Your information and permissions
2. Select Download your information
3. Choose Messages and specify Instagram
4. Request a copy of your data to be delivered to your email

The company did not announce plans to reintroduce E2EE for Instagram DMs, though it reiterated that WhatsApp messages and Messenger’s E2EE option remain unaffected.

Tech experts say the current change comes amid ongoing global debate over encrypted messaging, law enforcement access, and platform safety responsibilities. Instagram first rolled out optional E2EE for DMs in 2022 as part of a phased test. Meta completed default E2EE rollout for Messenger in late 2023, but has now opted for a different approach on Instagram.

Digital rights groups have raised concerns about the rollback as no official timeline was provided for further privacy updates.
