Renowned Islamic scholar Maulana Tariq Jameel has come under social media criticism after a video went viral showing him not shaking hands with a child during a public appearance.
The clip quickly spread online, sparking debate and mixed reactions from users, with some questioning his behavior while others called for restraint and context before judgment.
Following the backlash, Maulana Tariq Jameel’s son, Yusuf Jameel, issued a detailed clarification through a video statement on Instagram, addressing the controversy and urging the public to understand the situation before reacting.

He said criticism is a normal and necessary part of public life, but it should be balanced with listening to the other side.
He added that while the gesture of not shaking hands could have been avoided, it must be viewed in context rather than in isolation.
Yusuf Jameel explained that religious scholars like his father interact with thousands of people daily, including frequent handshakes, meetings, and photo requests, which can become physically and mentally exhausting over time.
He further said that the incident took place during Ramadan at night after a full day of fasting, prayers, and religious duties, including Taraweeh prayers and a scheduled speech at a seminary event. He said fatigue and routine strain may have contributed to the moment.
He also clarified that the child in the video was a student at their institution and not a stranger from the general public, noting that Maulana Jameel is generally affectionate and approachable toward children.
Yusuf Jameel urged critics to consider a person’s age, routine, and responsibilities before passing judgment, adding that respectful disagreement is always welcome and constructive criticism has never been rejected by his family.
