KARACHI: Male police officers have been barred from arresting members of the transgender community, under new rules of the rights protection act 2020 for transgender people.
According to details, Sindh High Court (SHC) heard a case related to legislation for the protection of transgender people’s rights. As per the orders, the court has barred male police officers from arresting members of the transgender community under new rules.
According to the rules issued by SHC, all government offices will have separate rows of transgender people. The government will facilitate members of the Transgender community for Hajj and Umrah. Under new rules, separate Dar-ul-Amaan’s will be set up for transgender people to house helpless members.
All government institutions will be required to formulate a policy to guide the community. Male police officers will not be able to arrest transgender, in case of arrest they will be kept in a separate lock-up.
Transgender people will be given free education opportunities in educational institutions. Employment policy will be formulated in all government institutions. The court disposed of the application of Tariq Mansoor Advocate after approval of the rules.
Laws have been enacted over the last few years to ensure that trans persons have the same rights as other citizens. These legal steps have been accompanied by rules aimed, in theory at least, at giving more breathing space to a group that has been traditionally discriminated against. There have been campaigns in the media highlighting how the transgender community is as capable and active as anyone if it is given the same opportunities.
