A female student at Tehran’s Islamic Azad University was arrested on Saturday after she stripped in protest, reportedly following an altercation with security forces over her hijab. A video of the incident, which shows the student walking at the university, has gone viral on social media.
University officials confirmed the arrest, with Amir Mahjoub, the Director General of Public Relations at Islamic Azad University, stating on X (formerly Twitter) that security intervened due to the student’s “indecent act.” He added that the motives behind her actions are under investigation.
According to the Amir Kabir Newsletter, a student group, the student disrobed after being harassed by security personnel for not wearing a headscarf, which allegedly resulted in her clothing being torn. Reports indicate that she suffered physical injuries during her arrest, including a head injury that caused heavy bleeding.
This incident comes amidst heightened enforcement of dress codes for women in Iran, particularly since the emergence of the Woman, Life, Freedom movement after the death of Mahsa Amini in September 2022. Amini died while in police custody for alleged hijab violations, sparking widespread protests and calls for reform.

In response to ongoing public defiance, Iranian authorities have intensified efforts to enforce mandatory hijab laws, including increased police presence and the use of facial recognition technology at universities. Despite a public outcry against these measures, the Iranian government continues to pursue strict dress code regulations, including the recent approval of the controversial Hijab and Chastity bill.
Following her arrest, university officials claimed the student was “under severe mental pressure” and suggested she might have a mental disorder. However, many social media users argue that her actions were a deliberate protest against the oppressive dress codes.
