Bollywood celebrity Malaika Arora, who made her dancing debut in Dil Se’s ‘Chaiyaan Chaiyaan’, has defended doing item numbers in movies.
Malaika recently defended the whole concept of item numbers in Bollywood in a podcast interview. According to her, they are just representations of the colourful, larger-than-life nature of the Indian movies.
She also admitted that the concept now, in today’s day and age, has really dwindled. “Because there’s just so much emphasis on not having to objectify,” said Arora. Malaika added that she never felt she was being objectified. In fact, she liked being the object of desire. For her, it felt like she was in control.

According to her, she has always been someone who likes being in control. She doesn’t like being told what to, how to, where to. Malaika became a part of ‘Chaiyaan Chaiyaan’ on her friend Farah Khan’s insistence.
According to her, the offer was simply too good to refuse. She’d be working with not just Farah, but co-star Shah Rukh Khan, director Mani Ratnam, composer AR Rahman, and cinematographer Santosh Sivan. She has also item songs like, ‘Munni Badnaam’, ‘Anarkali Disco Chali’ and others to her credit.
