Eventually, after postponed for four-time, polling for local bodies elections in Karachi is going to take place today.
Sindh government wanted to delay the elections once again after the Muttahida Qaumi Movement -Pakistan (MQM-P) raised objections over delimitations and demanded correction in it before holding the polls. The party also threatened quitting the federal government if their demand was not met. On this the provincial ruling Pakistan People Party (PPP), which is also part of federal government, tried its best to convinced the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to delay the elections both in Karachi and Hyderabad, but this time the electoral body rejected Sindh government request and as a result the Karachiites had the chance to elect their representatives for the city government today.
Election is a healthy activity in which the public use their right to select their representatives and rulers. It is the beauty of democracy that the power transfer from one person or party to another person or party in a peaceful way. Democracy and election process is also symbol of a civilized society.
In this context, we are lucky to live in a country where democracy and elections process exist. There are many countries in the world, and also in our neighbor, where the people are still deprived of democracy and don’t have any right of vote. Though the democracy in our country is not in an ideal condition but at least we have it and for this we should thank God. With the passage of time democracy in Pakistan will improve and the day will come when we will have an ideal form of it.
More and more participation of public in voting process strengthens the democracy in a country, so it is the responsibility of every Karachiite to fully participate in today’s democratic process and cast their votes.
Karachi has been facing many municipals problems due to absence of an elected city government for a long time and today’s LG polls is a ray of hope for the port city. Hope the new city government will solve all issue of the metropolises on priority basis.
