Mr. Perfectionist Aamir Khan is under fire from Hindu extremists, where the Bollywood actor had to offer a lengthy explanation over a photo of himself with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, as reported by Indian media.
According to details, trade relations between India and Turkey, as well as Azerbaijan, have become tense in recent days, after both countries supported Pakistan and condemned India’s so-called Operation Sindoor. In this context, a campaign to boycott Turkish products and tourism has begun across India.
Meanwhile, old photos of Bollywood actor Aamir Khan with Turkish President Erdoğan and his wife went viral on social media, for which Aamir Khan faced harsh criticism. Critics targeted him for meeting the head of a state that has supported Pakistan during recent Indian military actions.
Addressing the matter in an interview with a private channel, Aamir Khan explained: “Turkey did a very wrong thing, and every Indian is hurt by this.”
He further stated: “A few years ago, there was an earthquake in Turkey, and our government was the first to reach out with help. When I met Erdoğan in 2017, neither I nor the government knew that seven years later, they would treat us like this. We extended a hand of friendship, but in return, we got this behavior.”
Aamir Khan clarified that the photo with Erdoğan is from his 2017 visit to Turkey. He also said that the photo being claimed to be from 2020 with the Turkish First Lady is in fact also from before 2017.
The actor said: “As an artist, I represent my country abroad. When a host invites you for tea, it doesn’t seem appropriate to refuse.”
To prove his patriotism, Aamir Khan supported the Indian public’s boycott of Turkey, stating:
“People made the absolutely right decision. We should not support Turkey in any way. They sided with Pakistan when we were attacked, even though we had helped them first. Is that justice?”
It is worth noting that on May 7, India carried out a military operation named ‘Operation Sandhoor’ against Pakistan, which the Pakistan Army strongly responded to. Indian citizens remain upset over Pakistan’s alleged use of Turkish drones during the conflict.
Indian traders have also started boycotting Turkish products like apples and marble, however, Turkey continues to firmly support Pakistan like a solid rock.
