A landslide on the Karakoram Highway buried six vehicles under debris, while several passenger vehicles were also affected and two vehicles plunged into the river in the Chilas district of Gilgit-Baltistan.
According to Faizullah Faraq, spokesperson for the Gilgit-Baltistan government, after the landslide at Gandlo, there are reports that some individuals may be trapped under the debris.
While local media reported that six vehicles were buried under debris due to the landslide on the Karakoram Highway in Chilas, while several passenger vehicles were hit and two fell into the river.
The GB government spokesperson said that the Chief Minister of Gilgit-Baltistan has taken notice of the incident and directed authorities to accelerate rescue operations, while emergency has been declared in hospitals.
Faizullah Faraq added that there have been no confirmed reports of casualties from the landslide near Gandlo, as some passengers managed to save their lives by jumping out of their vehicles.
Earlier in July during monsoon season, heavy rains triggered multiple landslides along the Karakoram Highway, particularly affecting sections in Kohistan and Gilgit-Baltistan. One of the most impacted areas is the Tatta Pani region, where massive debris flow has severely blocked the highway, stranding several passenger vehicles on both sides.
