Foreign workers seeking employment opportunities in Kuwait will now find it easier to do so, thanks to recent changes in the country’s work permit regulations. The Kuwaiti government, through the Public Authority for Manpower (PAM), has introduced amendments to streamline the process of obtaining work permits, thereby opening new doors for foreign workers.
Under the updated rules, companies in Kuwait now have greater flexibility in hiring foreign workers to meet their operational needs. Gone are the constraints that previously categorized companies into groups based on the percentage of foreign workers they could employ. Instead, businesses can now freely recruit overseas workers as required, with each work permit priced at KD150.
Effective June 1, these changes aim to enhance the adaptability of Kuwaiti businesses to the dynamic labor market demands. Experts believe that this move will not only streamline access to international talent but also contribute to reshaping the country’s economic landscape.
One notable change is the elimination of the requirement for employers to transfer existing manpower within Kuwait before recruiting from abroad. This shift towards a more business-friendly environment is expected to reduce operational costs and increase efficiency for companies.
Previously, the practice of transferring workers internally and recruiting specific portions from overseas had drawn criticism for its impact on manpower wages and consumer prices. To address concerns about labor stability, the revised regulations also include a revised fee structure for issuing work permits.
Under the new fee structure, obtaining a work permit costs KD150 initially. Additionally, a KD300 fee applies for transferring a worker from one company to another within the first three years of employment, subject to the employer’s approval.
Overall, these changes signal Kuwait’s commitment to attracting and retaining international talent while fostering a more conducive environment for business growth and development.
