The global girl group Katseye has confirmed they have received “thousands” of online death threats and racist abuse since their debut last year.
In a recent interview with BBC News, members of the six-piece group revealed the extent of the harassment, stating that the messages have also targeted their families and can “get really heavy.”
Member Lara Raj shared that the volume of threats is “jarring,” and she has since deleted Twitter (now known as X) to avoid the negativity.
Raj, who is of Tamil Indian heritage, has also faced racist comments and was falsely reported to ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) for “working and residing in the United States without legal authorization.”
Member Sophia Laforteza acknowledged that being in the public eye is part of fame but stressed that the members are still human and the comments affect them and their families.
Another member, Manon Bannerman, highlighted the sexist nature of comments, noting that people “rank” the members based on appearance and skill, which she described as “dystopian” and “terrorising on the mind”.
The group, formed in 2023 on the reality show The Debut: Dream Academy, made their official debut in 2024.
They recently received a Grammy nomination for Best New Artist.
