Renowned industrialist and patron-in-chief of the Korangi Association of Trade and Industry (KATI) SM Muneer died of cardiac arrest in Karachi on Monday.
The former chairman of the Trade Development Authority of Pakistan (TDAP) left the KATI office early because of a fever. Muneer was then rushed to the hospital, but he passed away there.
In a statement, Abdul Wahab, the KATI spokesperson, confirmed the development.
Munir was a part of the leather industry and served on the boards of several banks and private companies.
Muneer held the position of chairman at Din Textile Mills Limited (Unit of Din Group of Companies), and was listed as vice-chair at MCB Bank Ltd, according to information available on the Din Group website.
Muneer received the ‘Sitara-e-Isaar’ and the ‘Sitara-e-Imtiaz’ in 2006 and 2007, respectively, by the President of Pakistan in recognition of his public services for the cause of humanity.
He was FPCCI, a Member of the Board of Governors of IoBM and Greenwich Collage, Karachi. He was on the Board of Shaukat Khanum Cancer Hospital, Lahore, and The Kidney Centre Post Graduate Training Institute.
He also served as the chairman of Chiniot Anjuman Islamia running many hospitals, maternity homes, schools and colleges in Karachi, Faisalabad and Chiniot.
He was awarded an Honorary PhD degree (doctorate of philosophy) in January, 2009 by the Sindh governor.
Following the news of his death, Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah offered his condolences.
