As Karachi is facing a growing burial-space crisis, the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) has developed a major plan to address the shortage. The proposal calls for the creation of four large graveyards, each spread over 500 acres, on the outskirts of the city, along with an additional 25-acre graveyard within Karachi limits.

The Sindh government has agreed to the idea in principle and is expected to grant full approval soon.

According to officials, the initiative gained momentum after repeated reports confirmed that most existing cemeteries have no remaining space.

Karachi Mayor Barrister Murtaza Wahab advocated for the project, leading to coordinated discussions between KMC and the provincial government. The inner-city graveyard is likely to be located near the newly constructed Shahrah-e-Bhutto.

Currently, Karachi has about 220 graveyards, of which 192 are officially allotted. These include 173 Muslim graveyards and 19 for non-Muslim communities, such as Christians and Hindus.

Of the allotted cemeteries, 46 are managed by the KMC, 20 by DHA, cantonments, or government bodies, while 112 are operated by private groups, community organisations, or social bodies. An additional 14 are run independently.
