Karachi has witnessed a recent surge in terrorism after reporting three incidents within a month. Law enforcement agencies should take serious notice of the deteriorating law and order situation in the city before the condition worsens
The latest attack occurred on Monday when an IED attached to a motorbike went off near the busy Bolton market in Karachi, killing a woman and injured a dozen others. A police van passing through the famous market was apparently the target of the blast which saw mayhem in the market.
Days ago, a blast went off in Saddar area, killing a passerby and injured several others. And earlier, a female suicide bomber blew herself up at the Karachi University, killing three Chinese teachers. The incident drew outrage and the Chinese government has called to arrest the perpetrators.
Amid the political and economic crisis, we have gradually witnessed several terror incidents as fringe groups take advantage of the situation. The federal and provincial governments have vowed not to let miscreants hurt peace in the city. This requires improving security arrangements to ensure protection of lives and properties.
The three terror incidents within the span of a month should serve as wake-up call for authorities who should be on high alert over the loss of previous lives. The terror attacks in busy, crowded areas have brought the open chinks in law and order situation which was exploited by the terrorists.
Law enforcement have been present in Karachi since 2017 carrying out operations against terrorists and other criminals. They gained considerable success and the improvement in security situation was highly lauded. However in recent months, the laxity has given an opportunity to such miscreants again.
Given the upsurge in terror activities in the country, the authorities should have been on full alert. If there is any negligence by the authorities, it needs to be probed and those responsible must be held accountable. The terrorists cannot be allowed to get the better of the law enforcers and spoil peace for which we have given tremendous sacrifices.
